Speeding Up XP

Post by SpikedCoffey »

OK guys, heres a few tips on speeding up your XP. Some of these settings don't actually make it run faster, but will atleast make it seem faster. I can assure you all of these setings are safe.

1. Click the "start" button
2. Go to "run"
3. type in "regedit" and hit OK
4. From the left list, click the folder "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"
5. From the left list, click the folder "Control Panel"
6. From the left list, click the folder "Desktop"
7. On the right, double click "MenuShowDelay"
8. Set the Value Data to "0" and then hit OK
9. On the right, double click "HungAppTimeOut"
10. The default setting should be "5,000" so set it to something between "2,500 and 3,000" I wouldn't recommend going below 2,500. Mine personally is set at 3,000. Once you've canged it hit OK
11. On the right, click "AutoEndTasks"
12. If this setting is not already set to "0" then set it to that now and press OK
13. Close the window, ur done.

That completes the registry edit setup, if you already have your windows boot setup how you want it then restart your computer at this time. If you want to edit your boot file for faster load speed then keep reading.

1. Click the "start" button
2. Go to "run"
3. Type in "msconfig" and hit OK
4. Click the tab at the top that says "startup"

OK now heres where having a little knowledge of whats running on your computer helps. Look in the column labeled "Commands". Read through that and find and find what you do and don't want to startup when windows starts up. Let me give you a hint on what you should keep. If you have a program for you graphics card, keep that. If you have an antivirus program you want to start the seond windows starts keep that (btw allowing an anti-virus program to launch when windows does is the #1 killer of PC speed, it can very easily triple, if not more your windows load time my reccomendation is to not allow it to launch with windows and that to only run the anti-virus program after your done using the computer) MSN messenger, thats your call, i personally don't allow mine to launch when windows launches. Winamp launch, some ppl like to have their player come up when windows starts. Also if your on a personal LAN (not a college dorm one) then you might have some broadband software you want to allow to launch. If you can think of any other programs that yu might want to launch with windows then post them here, but remember the goal here is to remove as many programs from the list. WIndows XP comes standard with no items in the list checked. So if you don't have any programs you want launching with XP, click "clear all" for the fastest possible launch time.

5. Hit OK and restart your computer. The first launch after making these chages probably won't be significantly faster, but the next one will definately. ON the relaunch of windows you'll see a windows saying something about a registry/launch change. Just check the box and hit OK.

if you did all of these things you should see a pretty good speed increase in your windows XP. The best result i've ever gotten out of this was using it on my fathers computer a few weeks ago. He saw a speed increase of almost 300% i would estimate.

I found this website really useful for finding out what all the abbreviations for the programs are. Most tasklist programs are listed alphabetically and have a description and whether they are essential or not.

as far as the tasks related to windows go that are on auto launch, I actually disabled all of them. If they are really essential they will still launch anyways so don't be too afraid of launching a windows task u can't identify. Like i said when i set mine i have very few tasks that launch.

MS Broadband (my local network software)
cli (my graphics card program)
jusched (java runtime enviroment)

thats it.

glad that helped you out Lee.

Turn off auto recover too. That thing is frigging useless. Oh, also, turn off error reporting. Both can be found by right clicking on "My Computer" and selecting properties, and fishing through the options there.

OK error reporting is pretty useless. Auto recover? Hmmm, that depends on if you have a lsave drivethat you back your files up to regularly. If you don't then idk if I would turn that off or not.
