ET anyone?

Post by lumberpat »

Hi all,

So, My friend is desperately trying to get an ET server started, however, if he can't get people to play on it, then he's not going to bother. Is there any serious interest in an american ET server?

Does your friend have the PnkBstrA, PnkBstrB, and PnkBstrK services enabled on his computer? (see services.msc)
Is there a firewall on your friends computer?
Is the firewall letting these services out onto the Web?
Does your friend have an anti-virus program on his computer that blocks programs, such as McAfee VirusScan Enterprise?

Maybe if Evenbalance learned to code there wouldn't be an issue, Kazza. Shouldn't need 2 services and a kernel-mode driver to "detect" cheats (and it even manages to fail at that with flying colors). They should take a lesson from Valve and VAC2. You see almost no cheating even on the worst-maintained of TF2/CSS/CS/etcetera pubs and instead of naming and shaming everyone who gets caught by PB all over the internet which causes them to rage (they are usually kids after all), get around the ban and cheat even more, VAC bans are all done silently and work on a system of strikes. Not to mention that VAC actually DETECTS cheats properly (as opposed to just looking at filenames, CVARs and hashes of modules and files open by the game then comparing them to a VERY incomplete, out of date database), doesn't force you to install what is essentially a rootkit and doesn't slow the hell out of your system. Oh, not to mention that VAC doesn't detect 10,000 false positives or prevent people from playing for absurd system/setup specific reasons, unlike PB. [/pb rant]

I guess I could drop by when I get around to reinstalling Linux on here (so I don't have to cope with the god-awful rootkit-esque Windows version of PB obviously), but I dunno what my ping will be like on US servers :/
